Type and Purpose of Learning
During this activity the students engage in make-believe play-based learning as they use elements and conventions of drama to communicate feelings, ideas and stories while taking on the role of someone working in the House of Commons.
The classroom is physically transformed by moving desks and chairs to resemble the setup of the House of Commons. Since students are actively taking part in a debate that is meaningful to them, they learn through meaningful play what governmental debates look like, sound like and feel like. Students engage in language learning using the vocabulary learned in class to express feelings and opinions.
By adopting the role of an adult professional, students are given a reason to use the vocabulary from the unit in an authentic and fun way.
