Type and Purpose of Learning
This project has the students involved in many types of play-based learning. In creating a diorama, they are engaging in creative learning as well as construction learning. They problem solve and use their imagination to design the diorama and they use the spatial reasoning, logic and experimentation of construction learning to build it. The students then engage in make-believe play as they take on the role of an archeologist to explain their tomb. As they activate meaningful play, the students bring to life a past time period.
By building a tomb, the students are motivated to really think about the symbols and culture of ancient Egypt. In taking on the role of an expert (archeologist), the students are given a reason to develop a story that includes characters and relationships, while using the correct vocabulary and terminology of the social studies unit. Essentially, the activity allows them to share their knowledge about ancient Egypt in a fun, dramatic way.
